Some cochlear implant companies offer waterproof accessories for sound processors. Users can order them directly from the manufacturers or from their distributors, such as UHAC (for Cochlear and Medel) or Connect Hearing (for Advanced Bionics). Note that disposable zinc-air batteries cannot be used with these devices.

Bicycle or other helmet

Users can contact the Association des Orthésistes et Prothésistes du Québec (www.aopq.ca ) to have their helmets adapted. Louis Garneau also offers a bicycle helmet modification service for cochlear implant users. However, the helmet must be Louis Garneau brand. This is done at the factory, and the cochlear implant user must be present. Other companies may also offer this service; users should enquire when purchasing a helmet. Note that safety standards no longer apply to helmets that have been modified.

Moisture and dirt protectors

Users can purchase these protectors at www.gearforears.com
There may be other suppliers that manufacture these types of products; these resources are given as examples only.

Protective headbands

Protective headbands are available for sports or activities that do not usually require wearing a helmet (soccer, etc.). The headband with shell must be custom made. For example, Ortoech in Brossard makes this kind of product. For information: www.ortoech.com  or 450-445-3452.

Users can also check whether this type of product is available from other companies that manufacture orthopedic devices, or ask the Association des Orthésistes et Prothésistes du Québec (www.aopq.ca).

Some cochlear implant companies offer decorative accessories for sound processors. Users can order them directly from the company. Some of these accessories are also sold at L'Hôtel-Dieu de Québec or the CIUSS du Centre-Sud-de-l’Île-de-Montréal, installation Raymond-Dewar.
